A nice place. I'm not exactly
sure when that sparse, 1950s modern look came back in style. Having
lived through the 50s, I can't imagine why it would (those who
haven't lived the past are condemned to repeat it?). However,
the chairs are comfortable and there is a nice bit of space between
the tab tables allowing for the privacy one rarely finds in a
restaurant. Being intimate with my neighbors while dining has
never been one of my choices. The food was excellent. I'm not
a cook, so I can't do descriptive justice to the meal, suffice to
say that the ragout I ordered was one of the best dishes I've ever
had in a restaurant, and I eat out a lot. The lemon bread was
plentiful and tasty. What appeared to be small portions turned out
to be a lot of food, so go with an appetite. Two complaints:
the food, as mentioned above, is imaginative, colorful, and
tasteful. The owner/waiter provided much interesting information:
all the ingredients are locally grown, organic, and were still
growing that morning; none of the food is prepared ahead of the
customer's order; everything on the plate, including the flowers is
edible and meant to be part of the meal. Unfortunately he kept
reminding us how good the food was, using overly effusive words like
fabulous, wonderful, great, and telling us how much we would love
it. Not that he was wrong. The food was as advertised, nouveau
comfort food, every bit as good as he claimed, and we were suitably
comforted and fed. We'd just like to discover those qualities for
ourselves. Second, what is it with restaurant owners and
music? I go out to eat in nice restaurants like this because I want
to enjoy the food and the company. The music in Spread was not
objectionable, in and of itself, but the volume and the bass level
made it difficult to talk, particularly in the acoustically "wet"
environment of those 1950s hard surfaces. I can understand why
the bass needs to be up cranked up. Music with very little content,
as much of today's music seems to be, has to make its presence known
though a more tactile interaction with its audience. However,
in a restaurant that is making a statement with the subtlty of the
flavors in it's food, music that intrudes upon that experience is,
as a Reader reviewer wrote years ago, like ground glass in the
mashed potatoes. The canned music in restaurants, coffee
houses and the like is, when it's not there to discourage customers
from lingering, provided for the enjoyment of the staff. If your
customers wanted music, they'd go someplace where it was live (if
you don't believe me, ask them). If you won't turn the music
off, at least turn it down, especially the bass. Not to leave
this review on a down note, the food really was excellent and the
menu offered many choices that I'm looking forward to trying. Given
the way they've chosen to work with the food, I can imagine that
there are many more recipies up the cook's sleeve than were on the
menu last night. Music or no, I will go back, and soon. |
